Assistance to transitional justice upon request of the EU may include:

  • Short-term strategic advice on transitional justice processes and technical support in specific areas of transitional justice such as, for instance, public consultations on transitional justice, documentation of human rights violations, truth seeking, investigations, criminal prosecutions, reparations, memorialization, guarantees of non-recurrence and vetting.
  • Production of comparative research products to guide the EU, and upon EU request, transitional justice practitioners, civil society, national advisors and others.
  • Training and coaching on aspects of transitional justice and related skills.
  • Providing platforms for exchange, trainings and workshops, as well as coaching on aspects of transitional justice.
  • Consultations on transitional justice related issues during or following peace negotiations.
  • Support to third parties involved in transitional justice processes, such as civil society organisations, community groups, media, international and regional organizations, as well as third-party governments involved in transitional justice processes.

Constitution-building assistance upon request of the EU may include:

  • Short-term technical support in design of constitution-making processes, such as establishing constitution making bodies, designing public consultations, data collection and management, and constitutional drafting.
  • Production of comparative research products to guide the EU, constitution makers, civil society, national advisors and others.
  • Training and coaching on aspects of constitution building and related skills.
  • Meeting, workshop and dialogue facilitation linked to constitution building, including as part of peace processes.
  • Support to reallocation of public power through institutional reform.
  • Assistance to formal state bodies charged with constitution making upon request of the EU, e.g. parliaments, constitutional commissions and constituent assemblies Support to third parties to constitution making, such as civil society, community groups, media, international and regional organizations.

Joint assignments with other FPI funded Facilities

The Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition carries out joint assignments with the other FPI funded facilities, the Security Sector Governance Facility and the European Resources for Mediation Support (ERMES III). This allows to better address the interlinkages between transitional justice, mediation, conflict analysis, conflict sensitivity as well as justice and security sector reform.

  • The Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition carried out joint assignments with the the Security Sector Governance Facility in Mali and Burkina Faso to analyse potential support to strengthen the justice sector, including transitional justice mechanisms.
  • In a joint assignment with the  European Resources for Mediation Support (ERMES III), experts of the Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition analysed the potential for conflict sensitive transitional justice engagement in Liberia.
